Senator Bill Nelson hasn’t much mentioned his career as an astronaut in his tightening race for re-election. But in a new ad, Nelson finally pulled that rabbit out of the proverbial hat.
Nelson: “Flew” :30
Attempting to take the focus from his Washington record of taxing and spending, Nelson now hopes that Floridians focus their eyes on the skies. But space cadet Bill Nelson also can’t afford to remind voters that fellow Democrat Barack Obama recently hammered the final nail into the Space Coast’s economic coffin. The Orlando Sentinel summed up the play fake in a recent article:
Nelson Works Hard to be Seen as Moderate
Indeed, it’s rare to see Nelson out front on major issues — save for NASA and Florida-centric problems.
Though he flogged BP for the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill — and helped ensure Gulf Coast states get the lion’s share of what could be $21 billion in fines — Nelson has taken little role in debates over the budget and debt ceiling.
One example was the controversy over whether health-insurance plans provided by religious organizations to their employees must offer birth control. Nelson joined with conservatives in successfully lobbying the White House to soften – but not repeal — that rule.
Even on his signature issues – NASA and space – Nelson’s record is as much supporter as leader.
Though he was successful in getting Charlie Bolden — the pilot of his shuttle mission — installed as NASA chief, the 2011 shuttle retirement cost thousands of jobs at Kennedy Space Center, and Obama canceled the Constellation moon program that Nelson once supported.
Bill Nelson’s only hope for re-election is that voters are space cadets on his Washington record. Like other liberals from swing states, he talks a moderate tone at home but then goes to the capitol to vote in line with Democrat party bosses over 90% of the time.
If Florida sends Bill Nelson back for another six years, we know what will happen. Taxpayers will get stuck with the tab while he is off in Washington spending us to the moon.
