Not knowing better and even occasionally being a glutton for punishment, I do sometimes peruse what my less-than-conservative friends cast out into the social media ether. I’d like to say it’s a masterful Sun Tzu of a “know thine enemy” sort of research, but the truth is with about 800 friends, some of the chatter is going to be from dang dirty lefties.
A few months ago, I noticed something interesting started happening… or, more to the point, NOT happening. The Hillary Clinton for president campaign, the candidate that everyone was to be excited to get behind… didn’t seem to be generating any excitement. There didn’t seem to be a preponderance of Hillaryheads. Those who did extol her “virtues” seemed to focus on rally cries including that she is a woman or quickly pretending the question was asking their fondness for Bill Clinton’s Fillmoresque caretaker presidency. Simply put, I just wasn’t seeing much full-throated shouting for Hillary.
But, as I said, perhaps I have a warped sample size. Perhaps the rank-and-file Dem is hyper for Hillary, and I just wasn’t seeing it from my vantage point. Turns out that, no… when the book and movie come out about Hillary 2016, it might be yet another addition of “He’s Just Not That Into You.”
Today we see the Bernie Sanders campaign closing in strong on Hillary Clinton in Iowa. Perhaps more telling is that the Washington Post reports the big Democrat donors are sitting on the sidelines, with just 52 of the 770 big-time Obama 2012 bundlers being onboard so far for Hillary. The “excitement”, such as it is, seems to be a possible Joe Biden run.
Do I still think Hillary will be the nominee?
But I also have a long enough memory that I know that at this time in 2007 I was saying “I wouldn’t bet against Hillary Clinton with money I found in the street.” This was about the time Rudy Giuliani was leading in Iowa with fundraiser letters proudly trumpeting that only he could stop the inevitable Hillary momentum.
The unstoppable Hillary train came to a screeching halt in 2008. Do we see the wheels coming off again? It certainly does not appear to be full steam ahead.
